Live from the SAP Leonardo Live Summit

Robbert van der Ploeg, 12 juli 2017

Yesterday and today July 11–12 I visited the SAP Leonardo Live, the global SAP summit being held in Frankfurt, Germany.

SAP is showing their latest technology and inspires with showcases for innovation. Tanja Ruekert, President IoT & Digital Supply Chain at SAP, described SAP Leonardo as the digital innovation system.
Yes, SAP is not just an ERP solution provider. SAP Leonardo is bringing innovative concepts such as Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Big Data, Predictive analytics and Blockchain to SAP’s business systems. These solutions are the modular capabilities of the SAP Cloud Platform. They are easy to deploy and consume, are open and extensible with rich API’s, and ready to run agnostic on infrastructures like the SAP Data Center, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services. SAP is bringing companies on the path to digital transformation with innovation that can scale across the entire organization!

Real-life use cases

At SAP Leonardo Live customers and partners demonstrate real-life use cases with us. Let me introduce some of them to you.

Mojio for instance is a fast-growing company in the connected car industry. Mojio is connecting cars to the internet via a dongle that connects to the ODB-port every car already has. This company has an open platform unlocking all diagnostic data from nearly any vehicle and enabling a new automotive ecosystem, bringing together different players like: carriers now able to tell a delivery is arriving in 30 minutes instead of timeframes somewhere between 9:00-17:00 hours, automotive dealers who have real customer insights and can advise customers with better service, auto insurers that can start new business models upon real data from drivers. And that platform…. that’s the SAP Cloud Platform!

Stara is the Brazilian agriculture precision farming company. Their sprayers, seeders and fertilizers can be equipped with IoT sensors. Based on the variability of the soil the doses of seeds, pesticides and fertilizers will be adjusted. This innovation brings better harvest results and savings on the amount of seeds, pesticides and fertilizers and via overlap reduction. The Stara IoT precision farming and telemetry platform is based on SAP Leonardo solutions!

Lexmark, the versatile printer, multifunctional copiers and managed print services company, combines the power of SAP Leonardo IoT with SAP Hybris Billing to deliver usage based billing while offering their products as a service to their customers.

Amag is the Swiss import, retail, leasing and service company for the car brands VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda. They have started a co-creation together with SAP consisting of the SAP Vehicle Insight solution to collect connected car data. Car data combined with customer dealer information form SAP Dealer Business Management will provide better customer insights and will make predictive maintenance possible. In their vision this open platform can create an ecosystem with partners to make easy parking, wireless payments at the gas stations, automated emergency calls, gamification to improve driving behavior and geolocated marketing possible.

Where to start

Quite often during the summit the question was raised where you as a company can start with becoming a digital company. How to leverage with the latest technology trends, changing business models and business processes, and how to engage with your customers and users? The answer to this question is you start with solution ideation making use of ‘Design Thinking’ and bring innovative ideas to life via rapid prototyping. After successful prototyping, you can start with creating, testing and refining the business case for ROI and strategic value. With a positive business case, you can start scaling to productive use based on a technology roadmap that identifies dependencies and remediates risks. Success patterns for doing this are: bringing business and IT together, start small but always think in end-to-end processes, go for superior user experience and superior added value, and the need of executive sponsorship. Becoming a digital company is a journey, continuous loop and infinite process.

Acorel is looking for innovative co-creation initiatives with customer companies. We have a clear vision on how to become a digital company and to bring value to your company using innovations like Cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Big Data, Predictive analytics and Blockchain.
